Viola Signe Marie Morton (nee Carlson) passed away peacefully Thursday May 8, 2014 at home.
Viola was born in Chicago June 23, 1913 to Gustaf A. and Signe (nee Bloberg) Carlson, who had both emigrated from Sweden, to settle in the North Park neighborhood. Viola graduated from Peterson Elementary and North Park Academy, attending North Park College and receiving B.A. from Northeastern Illinois University. She and Jesse W. Morton were married June 8, 1946 , both working for the Chicago Board of Education until retirement when they enjoyed traveling ,volunteering and church activities together until his death in 1983.
Throughout her life Viola was an active volunteer and leader in church and community groups, including leadership roles in PTA, Cub/Boy Scouts of North Park Covenant Church, Meals on Wheels, Presbyterian Missions and Board of Elders of Park Ridge Presbyterian Church. Viola was also an accomplished tennis player, artist and lifelong learner, enjoying lectures, concerts and current events through her 101st year!
Viola is survived by her children Bob (Denise) and Debbie (Patrick) Turski, grandchildren Jesse, Sandra, Michael and Megan, great-grandchildren Vanessa, Lissette and Angel, and many friends including special caregiver Jireh Mulingtapang. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Salvation Army Waukegan Corps Community Center, 850 S. Green Bay Rd, Waukegan, IL 60085 or 1-800-SAL-ARMY in Viola's memory would be appreciated. Visitation Monday from 4 to 9pm at Nelson Funeral Home, 820 Talcott Road, Park Ridge. Lying in State Tuesday 10am until time of service 11am at Park Ridge Presbyterian Church, 1300 W.
