Shirley (nee Ciorba) Kalamaras, loving mother andgrandmother, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2024, at the age of 88. Shirley was born on September 4, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois to Vincent and Patricia Ciorba. She attended Steinmetz High School and Lake Forest College.
Shirley was the proud mother of four children: Lisa, Stacey, Vincent, and Christopher. She devoted her life to her family, nurturing and raising her children and creating a home where everyone felt welcome and creating a warm and inviting home that was a popular gathering spot for friends and family. Shirley was an exceptional baker, known for her delicious homemade pies. As a cook, she learned how to make authentic Greek dishes and a roast graced every Sunday dinner table. Shirley had a keen sense of style and was known for her signature red hair. She was the perfect hostess, known for throwing lavish parties featuring all homemade food and desserts.
Shirley enjoyed playing bridge and regularly played for more than 40 years. She volunteered in her children's schools and supported various causes. She maintained many lifelong friendships. Shirley's infectious charm touched many lives, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who knew her. For more than 11 years, Shirley's best friend and trusted co-pilot Oscar was always by her side no matter the day's errand, waiting patiently in the car's backseat with a wag of his tail.
Grandmother was the title Shirley cherished most, and she wore it with pride. She relished being able to spend as much time as possible with her four grandchildren and enjoyed watching them grow up. Shirley is survived by her children Lisa Kalamaras, Stacey Kalamaras, Vincent (Samantha) Kalamaras, and Christopher (Keri) Kalamaras; her grandchildren Cassidy, Dominic, Nicholas, and Brandon; her extended family and many friends.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Dorothy Ciorba, her brother Nicolas (Shirley) Ciorba, and her sister Elizabeth (Sam) Bodrojan. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Shirley's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, donations may be made online by CLICKING HERE .
A Memorial Visitation will take place on Sunday, August 4, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. till the time of Service, 3:30 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home, 820 Talcott Road, Park Ridge, IL 60068. On Monday, August 5, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., the family will gather, and anyone who would like to join, for her inurnment at All Saints Cemetery, 700 N River Rd, Des Plaines, IL 60016.
Shirley's legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew her best. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
