A native of Park Ridge, after graduating from Maine East High School in 1942, he served in the Navy for 3 years during World War II, seeing action at the Battle of Lingayen Gulf in January 1945. After the war, he attended Northwestern University where he graduated with a BS in engineering in 1949.
