Mildred Caroline Friess, a life-long resident of Chicago, died on December 15, 2018. The only child of Francesco "Frank" John Garbarino and Caroline Wilhelmine "Lena" (Schulz) Garbarino, she was born in Chicago on July 6, 1921. A member of SteinMetz High School class of 1939, she graduated fifth in her class and took night classes in accounting and book-keeping at Schurz High School. On October 27, 1945, Mildred was joined in marriage to Edward "Ed" E. Friess at Bethel Lutheran Church, Chicago. Mildred was employed as a bookkeeper for most of her working career. Although Mildred and Ed had no children, they were known as "Aunt and Uncle" to the children of Mildred's cousin, Lois J. (Netrefa) Szarz. She is lovingly survived by her "niece" Joan E. (Szarz) Bolthouse of Fredericksburg, Virginia, five "great nieces and nephews", four "great-great nieces", and dear and close friends, Ruth Stark, of Chicago, and Gary and Janet Johnson, of Park Ridge. Ed, her loving husband predeceased her on April 10, 1991. She was also predeceased by her parents, her cousin Lois, and her "niece" Karen L. (Szarz) Daubs. Mildred was an avid reader of books and newspapers, but her passion was pinochle. According to Mildred's wishes, a private memorial service will be held graveside at Elmwood Cemetery and Mausoleum, River Grove, IL.
