Mary J. Gaut was born in Chicago on January 1, 1924, the only daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (nee Steinert) Gaut. She lived her entire life on the same block in the Edgewater neighborhood that she loved. As a young woman she worked as a secretary in a local construction firm. After a long period of caring for her aging parents, she worked for many years at Evanston Hospital until she retired in her late 70s. Throughout her life she devoted much time and love to her three nephews. She was also a pioneering home movie maker, capturing family memories on film starting in the early 1940s. She was preceded in death by her parents, her step-brother Frank, her brother Arthur; and her sister-in-law Patricia Mathews Gaut. She is survived and mourned by her nephews Greg Gaut (Marsha Neff), Winona, MN; Jeffrey Gaut, Morton Grove, IL; Jonathan Gaut, Des Plaines, IL; and her devoted friends Darlene M. Evans (Jerry), Gainesville, GA; Darlene's daughters and their families; and Marcia Gustafson, Chicago. Visitation Saturday February 28, from 12 noon to the time of prayers service 1:30 p.m.
