Iris Mack of Libertyville, a long-time Chicago resident, died Sunday the 20th of March at Winchester House Nursing and Skilled Care facility.
Born in 1929 on the island of Barbados, Iris moved to the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago in 1967. She found a place for herself at Children's Memorial Hospital, working as a technician in Medical Materials Management until her retirement in 1994. It wasn't long after she arrived in Chicago that she met David Mack, a school teacher. The two fell in love and married in 1976, and she stayed by his side until 2003 when David passed away.
Iris loved black and white movies, going to Church, playing the lottery, and tending to her plants. She was a devoted mother and friend to relatives and neighbors. She may not have had a backyard, but that didn't keep her from growing a magnificent garden in the window of her apartment. At the end of every year, she insisted on making a huge Thanksgiving feast for her family – with only a tiny oven and microwave to make it happen.
She is survived by her brother, Charles Clarke of Barbados, her sister Elaine Carter of Barbados, her son Anthony Frederick Clarke and her Granddaughter Stacey Noelle Clarke - all of whom will miss her beautiful smile and smart sense of humor.
Visitation Thursday, March 24, from 9 am until time of Service; Service will be held at 10 am at Nelson Funeral Home, 820 Talcott Road, Park Ridge.
