IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Helen
Mulopulos
May 14, 1929 – February 20, 2021
Helen Mulopulos, 91, of Park Ridge, Illinois passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on February 20, 2021. Helen's life began in Chicago where she was born to George and Mary Mouloukos, who immigrated to America from Greece. The second of three girls, Helen was welcomed by sister Nena and the two were joined later by Sophie. As Helen's parents worked tirelessly at their soda shop (Mr. G's) to provide for the family, the three girls were "latch key kids", who looked after themselves after school or spent time at the Marquette Park District, where Helen was first introduced to organized sports. She and her parents were proud and grateful to be Americans. Her mother encouraged education and the arts and Helen learned to play the piano and enjoyed playing throughout her life. She shared her love of music with her family. Helen graduated from Robert Lindblom Technical High School in Chicago, where she earned various athletic awards, including the best athlete award, the "L" cup. She was a member of the "L" Club, a club for women who earned varsity letters, and maintained her friendship with many of them for years. Her enthusiasm for athletics led her to pursue and earn a bachelors degree in physical education at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. After graduating from college, Helen taught physical education at Lindblom, her alma mater. Her destiny took a magical turn at a Hellenic beach party in Michigan where her soon-to-be-husband, Sam, spotted her doing flip-flops and cartwheels on the beach. Helen said it was a miracle the way they met and she never stopped feeling that she was in a match made in heaven. Sam and Helen began their married life in 1953 in Chicago and began a family that eventually grew to a close knit family of seven. Helen's priority was caring for her family. She provided love and support, and modeled humility, compassion, kindness, and resilience. She enjoyed volunteering as a room parent, being a Sunday school teacher, and singing in the church choir. In her earlier years she enjoyed playing tennis, skiing and entertaining. In her later years she was grateful to maintain treasured friendships by meeting weekly for coffee with her "breakfast group" and meeting weekly for lunch with dear friends from church and choir. Her favorite hobby throughout her entire life was documenting the many wonderful adventures and gatherings she enjoyed with family and friends by taking photos and creating beautiful annotated albums. She was loved by everyone who knew her and will be greatly missed. She had a knack for making everyone feel valuable and loved. Helen is survived by her husband, Sam Mulopulos M.D., her children John S. Mulopulos (Diane), George P. Mulopulos MD (Jenny), Mary Ellen Mulopulos, Julíé Eugenis (Cameron), Laura Mulopulos (Bill Ovca) and her grandchildren Sam John, Jack, Peter, Sam Cameron, Sam George, and Madeline. Funeral arrangements and services were private per Helen's request. Donations may be made to Hillsdale College at www.hillsdale.edu or Hospice Foundation of America at https://hospicefoundation.org/
