Helen Ann Morrissey nee McGivern, age 80, passed away on May 7, 2020. She was born in Minneapolis, MN, to the late Robert and Margaret McGivern. Beloved wife of Dennis; loving mother of Kathleen, the late Robert, Edward, Dennis (Lori), and Therese (David); devoted grandmother of Vanessa, Kevin, Katie, Ryan, Bobby, Jamie and Heidi; great-grandmother of Kaylie and Elle; loving aunt to many nieces and nephews; stepsister to Mary Cele and Eileen: and fond sister-in-law to Norine.
She was preceded in death by her siblings Robert, Michael, Kathleen, James, William and John.
Helen was raised in Edgebrook and Sauganash and graduated in the Class of 1957 at St. Scholastica High School. Helen married Dennis at age 20 at Queen of All Saints Catholic Church in Chicago. Following his graduation from West Point, they immediately drove to Fort Bragg, NC where they started their family. Helen raised the children during her husband 's extended deployments overseas. They were stationed in Ft. Hood, TX, El Paso, TX and returned to the Chicago area in 1975, first stationed at Fort Sheridan, IL. They were pleased to be among family again. In 1976 they bought a home in Northbrook where they stayed for the next 44 years. Helen's primary focus in her life was raising and supporting her family. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. She took pride in decorating her home and creating and maintaining her garden. She enjoyed traveling and took many trips over the years with her closest friend of 75 years, Kathleen. She discovered her gift for oil painting at age 58. She loved to paint and over the next 20 years created over 110 paintings, many of which were gifts to family.
Helen's family would like to thank all of the special family and friends who have been steadfast in their support. Due to the COVID pandemic, services, memorial mass, and interment will be planned after 5/31 and updated on legacy.com. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to your favorite charity. Arrangements were entrusted to Nelson Funeral Home.
