Aili T. (Leppanen) Imarisio, age 96, of Chicago, IL passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, April 19, at The Breakers at Edgewater, an independent living community where she resided since May of 2007. Born June 7, 1916, in Palmer, MI, daughter of Eva and Kalle Leppanen, Aili spent many of her formative years in Upper Peninsula. She is a graduate of Northern Michigan University, Marquette, MI, a teachers college at the time. Aili taught school in the Chicago area. Aili then had a career with the American Red Cross Overseas group serving in Japan during the 1940s and subsequently serving in Germany and New York. While in New York she met the love of her life, Dr. John Imarisio. They were married in 1955. Survivors include her husband, Dr. John Imarisio; her sister, Martha Leppanen of Marquette, MI; her nephew, Kenneth (Deanna) Hair of Ann Arbor, MI; three nieces, Kristen (Justin) Hair Kaiser of Highland Park, IL, Kimberly Hair of Lincoln Park, IL, Jennifer Hair of Canton, MI; many cousins, extended family and her primary caregiver of five years, Devina Enad. Aili was preceded in death by her sisters, Ida and Anne. There will be a celebration of Aili's life from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24 at the Nelson Funeral Home located at 5149 N. Ashland Ave., Chicago, IL 60640 (773-561-5147). Burial will be at the Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be directed to the Children's Memorial Hospital, Department 4589, Carol Stream, IL 60122.
