Bill D. Mantis, age 82, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 30, peacefully in the hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born to Dimitrios and Eleni Mantis, nee Dousias, on May 10, 1926. Bill is survived by his beloved wife and partner of 50 years, Ndina; his daughter, Eleni and son-in-law, Richard "Koz" Kozlowski. Bill was the second oldest in a family of eight children. He left home at the age of 12 to work and earn money for his family. He went to school, joined the Greek Navy for four years and went on to a life of 12 years in the Merchant Marines and traveled the world until his marriage. Bill was an avid gardener and Chicago sports fan, especially the Cubs and Bears. Bill was a member of the U.S. Steel Workers and Brotherhood of Achladokambiton. He was a devoted and cherished husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, godfather, friend and an inspiration to many. He was a special "Pappou" to Lucky and Coco and he will be missed. Ron Ziebarth, 52, Chicago, Illinois Born August 30, 1956 Chicago mourns the loss of a longtime fixture in the gay and lesbian community. He passed away on Tuesday, September 23, 2008. For over 25 years Ron served up his own recipe for drinks, music, humor and friendship from behind the bar at Christopher Street, Berlin, Roscoe's North End, Side Track, Voltaire, T's, SoFo, and others. His style, amazing memory, and ability to entertain set him apart from everyone else in his field. His appreciation of, and genuine commitment to his patrons created many long lasting friendships. Originally coming to Chicago in the early 80s to support his brother's long fight with HIV/AIDS, Ron showed then and continued to show his compassion and loyalty to his fellow man. Everyone was family to Ron. Ron is survived by his mother, two sisters, two brothers, nieces and nephews, all living in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan. He is also survived by his two beloved pets, Big Boy and Preston. Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 2, at Unity Church, 1925 W. Thome in Chicago.
